Heather Haward - Am I a Mersea-ite

A life-long Mersea resident, Heather told us all about her childhood on the island when the world was a simpler place and a visit to East Mersea was a big deal!  She also finally cleared up the origins of the name, Monkey Beach.

John Pittock - Tapestry of Mersea Life

We were thrilled to have John Pittock come and give his talk A Tapestry of Mersea on Wednesday 31st January. John entertained us for an hour with tales of his youth before, during and after the war growing up on the island. We especially loved hearing about him and his friend skipping school to hang out with the Italian prisoners of war who were sent from what is now the Military Corrective Unit to help out the farmers on the field that now houses Mersea Barns. One of John's earliest memories is coming to look at where he and his family would be moving to and seeing so many boats in Pyefleet channel that you couldn't see the water! He thinks this was a reserve fleet for the D-Day landings. What an impressive sight that must have been. Thank you again to John for an entertaining and informative evening.
