About

The Society was formed to preserve, safeguard and promote the characteristics of Mersea Island for the benefit of all, to arrange open discussion whenever it appears necessary to obtain a consensus of public opinion and to provide opportunities to gain factual knowledge from lectures, visits and discussion of this GREAT ISLAND.

The Society publishes it’s annual journal, the “Mistral”, providing a view of various aspects of life in Mersea both past and present and addressing issues of concern. Items of local interest for the “Mistral” are contributed by members and friends.

The Society organises lectures on a variety of topics by guest speakers, occasional coach tours to places of interest, and other social events throughout the year.

The Mersea Island Society Footpath Group organises a walk once a year to cover every footpath on the island to ensure they are in good order and report any defects to the authorities.

The Society welcomes new members and encourages members to come forward for various roles on the Committee to enable it to undertake a wider range of activities.

“It seems there is considerable anxiety amongst the residents about the future of our Island, and it is felt that this is a very necessary matter for discussion before the general muddle of Mersea development and amenities goes too far to be arrested”.

Our Mission

Our Mission

"Although the main thrust of the Society was and still is to guard against development and proposals deemed at variance with the Island’s characteristics, a wider vision was set with the creation of study groups on nature conservancy, civic affairs, history, education and culture."

At this “Golden Birthday” time it is quite appropriate to take a retrospective look over the past 50 years, starting with a return back to the Mersea Island Society’s formation. (From Mistral 2014)
